Nathan Hatfield, Philadelphia surgeon, was born on 6 May 1844. He was a son of physician Nathan L. Hatfield. During the Civil War, he was assigned to the military hospitals of Race Street, in Philadelphia, and Haddonfield. He received an M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in 1865, practiced medicine with his father, and then became assistant to Samuel D. Gross.
